Peterson is a skilled power forward with a quick, powerful and polished stride. He has strong crossovers, which helps him gain speed quickly on the zone breakout. He is explosive and he moves up the ice with speed. He can be quite dangerous off the rush as he’s able to pass defenseman on the outside with speed and cut to the net thanks to his incredible strength. He’s also surprisingly agile and good on his edges for a big man. He owns a rocket of a wrist shot, although he struggles to find times where he can use it effectively. He has solid puck skills and can get creative with his offensive chances as he also loves driving hard to the net. He has solid puck protection, as he can shield the puck with his tremendous strength, and keep his feet moving thanks to his strong edges. Defensively, he is very involved and backchecks with intensity. He loves getting involved in board battles and often wins puck battles with his impressive physicality. His tendency for dumping the puck in can be frustrating at times as he has space to skate it up the ice and he doesn’t always take advantage of it. Despite his size and mobility, he sometimes struggles to make an impact because he’s not thinking the game at as high of a level as others and needs to improve his decision making. Overall, he has the physical tools that a team could work with to exploit opponents.
