Butler is still a very raw player, but he shows a good understanding of the game. His skating is average with good speed, but his edge work and agility aren’t anything special. He is a decent skater with the puck in transition but is typically the secondary option for transporting the puck through the neutral zone. He doesn’t have one stand-out quality, but his understanding of the game helps him get to dangerous areas where he can score. He takes shots from all over the offensive zone, often from an unexpected angle or position in the zone to throw opposing goaltenders off and his ability to deceive is where his scoring will come from. He doesn’t possess a booming shot or even all that quick of a release, but he finds the right spots. He does a good job of adjusting his shooting angle with good stickwork and quick hands but the shot itself is only slightly above average.  His passing still needs work, but he understands where to send the puck. He has good hand/eye coordination and a hard nose for the net. In his own end, he does a good job of not giving his man space to get open and he stays in between the puck carrier and the netminder. He plays a very man-to-man style of defense that could burn him when the opponent is a better skater. He gets his stick in the way and isn’t afraid to bump and battle players in the slot or along the boards.
