Gaudreau’s composure, patience and focus stand out in his play. He’s in full possession of his crease, and when he senses trouble around, he never hesitates to freeze the play and go for the defensive faceoff. His fluidity in the crease is very impressive, where his movements seem free of resistance even though they are not flashy, plus the way he can move from backward to forward in butterfly position is sublime. Another aspect of his game that looks underestimated is his capability to reset and to gain back his composure. He can go from down and up in a hurry and be ready for the next shot at any time. His poise and maturity level is almost unheard at his age. Gaudreau rebounds tend to stay in close to him, which can be a blessing if played right or can be a curse if the opposition jumps on the puck. Gaudreau’s long arms and legs gripped together help him to protect the corners of his net and he can even stretch to reach wide pucks with his blocker or his glove without much apparent difficulty. His great athleticism also helps him to get out trouble on broken plays, where pucks tend to go in any direction; but still you can’t count Gaudreau defeated. He can make his move to go down on his knees, extend his leg and still have a chance to stop the puck, which is very impressive. In full control of play, his rebound management is on point as is his catching technique. He will present his glove wide open to the shooter and when the puck is in it, Gaudreau makes sure to squeeze the puck so he avoids allowing any dead pucks close to him and the net. The same thing happens on high shots as he is careful to block the shot with his chest protector and then close in on the puck with both his blocker and glove together. His rebound management is still not perfect, but it’s not a weakness in his game. Either way, he plays his angles very well, especially on lateral plays, but he could also do a better job when it comes down to sealing his post. At times, there’s a clear distance between the post, his arm. and his body.
