POW Watch: Week Ending Oct. 11, 2021

Austen Swankler, a freshman with Bowling Green, was among the rundown of players named to NCAA Division I men’s hockey players of the week.

Swankler, an undrafted free agent who did not play last season, was named CCHA Rookie of the Week after posting two assists for Bowling Green in a pair of games against RPI to start his collegiate career.

The 20-year-old did not play last season; he had 45 points (18 goals, 27 assists) in 59 games with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League in 2019-20.

WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brayden Schuurman (Victoria Royals)

Brayden Schuurman was named Player of the Week. He had six points (five goals, one assist) in two games. Schuurman, who is eligible for the 2022 NHL Draft, has matched his goal total from the 2020-21 WHL season (5) in just three appearances with the Royals this season.

WHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK – Sebastian Cossa (Edmonton Oil Kings)

Sebastian Cossa has been named WHL Goaltender of the Week after posting a 1.30 goals against average and .949 save percentage in three games. Cossa, selected in the first round (No. 15) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Draft, is 3-1-1 with a 1.38 GAA and .950 save percentage in five appearances this season.

OHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jack Thompson (Sudbury Wolves)

Jack Thompson was named OHL Player of the Week after having a league-leading seen points (two goals, five assists) in two games. The 19-year-old, entering his third season in the OHL, has amassed 55 points (21 goals, 34 assists) in 117 career games. Thompson, was selected in the third round (No. 93) of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, spent last season with Surahammars IF of Sweden’s HockeyEttan circuit, recording 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) in 18 games.

OHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK – Tucker Tynan (Niagara IceDogs)

Tucker Tynan is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two victories, a 1.44 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage in a pair of contests. Tynan is in his second season after posting an 11-8-3-1 record with a 3.80 GAA and .910 SV% in 23 games in 2019-20 before sustaining a life-threatening injury in December 2019.

QMJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Xavier Parent (Sherbrooke Phoenix)

Xavier Parent  has been named QMJHL Player of the Week after registering seven points (three goals, four assists) in two games. The 20-year-old Phoenix captain was the No. 4 pick in the 2017 QMJHL Draft. He had 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) in 24 games last season.

USHL FORWARD OF THE WEEK – Jackson Hallum (Green Bay Gamblers)

Jackson Hallum was named USHL Forward of the Week after netting seven points (six goals, one assist) in two games played. Hallum was selected in the third round (No. 91) in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Vegas Golden Knights.

USHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK – Joaquim Lemay (Lincoln Stars)

Joaquim Lemay was named the league’s Defenseman of the Week after posting four points (one goal, three assists). Lemay was selected in the fourth round (No. 119) of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals.

USHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK – Simon Latkoczy (Madison Capitals)

Simon Latkoczy was named USHL Goalteder of the Week after picking up a pair of wins last weekend after allowing just one goal on 53 shots from the Youngstown Phantoms. He is among the league’s goaltending leaders as he is tied for the best goals against average (0.99), is second in save percentage (0.964) after allowing just three goals on 83 shots this season.

CCHA FORWARD OF THE WEEK – Alec Broetzman (Michigan Tech)

Alec Broetzman had a CCHA-high five points (two goals, three assists) on the weekend in a non-conference road sweep at Wisconsin.

CCHA DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK – Gabriel Chicoine (Bowling Green)

Gabriel Chicoine had three assists in two games against RPI, tied for second among CCHA defensemen. He leads Bowling Green with a plus-3 rating.

CCHA GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK – Blake Pietila (Michigan Tech)

Blake Pietila registered a 1.50 goals against average and .952 save percentage in a two-game sweep at Wisconsin, including a 38-save performance in a 5-2 win on Friday.

CCHA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Austen Swankler (Bowling Green)

Austen Swankler had two assists on the weekend, assisting on goals by Nathan Burke in two games against RPI.

HOCKEY EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK _ Marshall Warren (Boston College)

Marshall Warren had three points (one goal, two assists) to lead Boston College to the IceBreaker Tournament title. He had 10 shots in two games and a plus-3 rating. Warren was selected in the sixth round (No. 166) of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild.

HOCKEY EAST DEFENDER OF THE WEEK – Declan Carlile (Merrimack College)

Declan Carlile had three points (two goals, one assist) to pace Merrimack’s start to the season, including his first collegiate multi-goal game on Thursday against Providence. He has a plus-four rating, and led the team in goals, points and plus-minus on the weekend.

HOCKEY EAST GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK – Darion Hanson (University of Connecticut)

Darion Hanson stopped 72 of 75 shots faced to go 1-1-0 to start his season — including his first Hockey East win of the year.

HOCKEY EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Cody Monds (Providence College)

Cody Monds had three points (one goal, two assists) in two victories for Providence College, including the game-winning goal in a 5-2 win against Merrimack to open the season.

NCHC FORWARD OF THE WEEK – Ethan Frank (Western Michigan)

Ethan Frank notched five points (three goals, two assists) with seven shots on goal and a plus-four rating to lead Western Michigan to a home-and-home sweep of Ferris State.

NCHC DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK: Jake Sanderson (North Dakota)

Jake Sanderson led North Dakota to a regular season-opening sweep of Niagara, recording four points (two goals, two assists) with a plus-three rating in two games. Sanderson’s four points are tied for most among NCHC defensemen. He was selected by the Ottawa Senators with the No. 5 pick of the 2020 NHL Draft

NCHC GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK – David Hrenak (St. Cloud State)

David Hrenak allowed just one goal in each of his two outings, going 1-1-0 with a .962 save percentage and a 1.01 goals against average while totalling 50 saves. He is 3-1-0 this season with an NCHC-best .961 SV% and 0.84 GAA, the latter topping the nation. Hrenak was selected in the fifth round (No. 144) in the 2018 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

ECAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Skyler Brind’Amour (Quinnipiac)

Skyler Brind’Amour had three points in the opening weekend Icebreaker Tournament, and was named to the 2021 Icebreaker All-Tournament Team.

ECAC GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Emil Zetterquist (St. Lawrence)

Emil Zetterquist allowed just two goals on 71 shots at Colorado College on the weekend, posting a .972 save percentage and 0.96 goals against average — tops in the league for goaltenders that played multiple games.

ECAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Tommy Bergsland (Colgate)

Tommy Bergsland, a defenseman, had points in two of three games on the weekend, including a pair of assists in a 5-3 win at Vermont on Friday.
