POW Watch: Week ending Dec. 13

Jake Livanavage, eligible for the 2022 NHL Draft, had himself a week.

Livanavage has been named the USHL Defenseman Player of the Week for the week ending December 12, 2021, helping the Chicago Steel secure the sweep over the Cedar Rapids Roughriders and the Muskegon Lumberjacks over the weekend by registering four points (one goal, three assists) in two games. He had a huge night on Friday by putting up three assists in a 6-4 win against the Roughriders and followed it up with registering one goal on Saturday in a win against the Lumberjacks.

Livanavage, born in May 2004, leads all defensemen on the team in scoring with 21 points (2 goals, 19 assists) in 25 games.

The University of North Dakota commit also leads all U18 defensemen in the USHL in points.

“He is a mobile, offensive-minded defender that has excellent skating and playmaking capabilities,” FCHockey scout Austin Broad said. “This allows him to activate from the backend and become a threat from anywhere on the ice.”

Livanavage is an elite skating defenseman that was impressive for the U18 team USA squad that played at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup this past summer. He collected four points (two goals, two assists) in four games, again topping all defense on the team in points.

“He is also effective at 5-on-5, and with his skillset can easily slot in and help run a team’s powerplay unit.” Broad said. “There might be some wrinkles on the defensive side, but his skating ability and offense make him an intriguing defenseman.”

If Livanavage continues to improve upon the defensive aspect of his game, he could shoot up the rankings for this upcoming 2022 NHL Draft.
